Builder Spotlight - Bunny Liaw

Adrian 'Bunny' Liaw is one of the most prolific and successful female team captains in BattleBots history, boasting a career-best Top 16 finish in the most recent season – World Championship VII. Despite debuting the horizontal drum spinner Malice in 2020, her involvement within BattleBots and the wider sport runs much, much deeper.

Like many team captains in recent seasons, Bunny Liaw watched the Comedy Central series, citing Team Razer's unique entry Warhead as her favorite competitor. After picking up a poster of the robot as a child, she kept and still displays it in her garage to this day. Though Bunny herself would not enter during the original BattleBots run, her future husband David Liaw competed in Season 5.0, but never made it to televi…

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 10)

Hello and welcome back! We've finally reached the end of the list, and it's time to find out who the biggest winner of the Battlebots Proving Ground is! Last time, we took a look at Traves T's meteoric rise from mysterious meme to cult commander. Today, we'll examine another bot by a veteran builder, one who's been hanging around for years, but only now is finding true, consistent success in Battlebots. For the final time, let's dive on in!

Craig Danby has been building robots for about as long as I've been alive, and for many years has been among the sport's most beloved veterans. However, despite two and a half decades of competition he's always struggled to find success at the heavyweight level, particularly when it comes to televised co…

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 9)

Hello and welcome back! In our last installment we took a look at veteran mainstay Jackpot, whose Proving Ground runs helped bolster waning confidence in its capabilities and win over the Vegas crowds. Today, we'll examine a bot who shares Jackpot's color scheme and proved a standout in its debut, but otherwise is about as different as can be. Let's dive right in!

Kurt Krueger summed up the initial response to his robot's reveal perfectly: What the hell is that? When its design was finally revealed in late June after weeks of speculation, many found it confusing, amusing or downright goofy. Standing atop thin-looking stilts with direct drive wheels, minimal armor and a chunky spinner, the bot looked like something you'd see in a 2004 event.…

Covering Robot Combat lost media

DISCLAMER: I am just a beginner at making Fandom Blogs, so i might be a little rusty

Here I want to cover some robot combat lost media to discuss what they are like and going in depth on certain aspects of various lost media content

I also did this because I felt like it

BATTLEBOTS WARTHOG/THQ GAME:

Status:

Nintendo GameCube Version: Partially Found

PlayStation 2 Version: Lost

A game that was set to release in 2003 (okay technically it was supposed to released in November 2002 as sort of a Christmas gift but after delays it was moved to 2003), the Nintendo GameCube version wouldn't be found until 2022 by Gatorbox, 2 decades after its initial planned release in 2002, the reason why this was cancelled was because the cancellation of the show. Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 8)

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment we took a look at Roundhouse, the promising new entry from Team Robogym, and the destructive path they carved during their Proving Ground appearance. Today we'll examine another bot who made a rather destructive mark on the live show, albeit spinning the other way. Let's dive in!

Perhaps an odd machine to see so late in the roster, given its recent performance in the Golden Bolt. Jackpot first came onto the scene as a post-Covid addition to the World Championship V roster, performing above expectations by going undefeated in the fight cards before losing a tough draw against RotatoR. It followed this up with another undefeated run in 2021, taking down former champion Tombstone before bowing o…

TOP 50 MODERN BATTLEBOTS (PART THREE)

Welcome to part two of my Top 50 Modern BattleBots series! Here is how our list stands after part two!

  • #50: Fusion
  • #49: Mammoth
  • #48: Free Shipping
  • #47: Complete Control
  • #46: Lucky
  • #45: Jackpot
  • #44: Malice
  • #43: Chomp
  • #42: Blacksmith
  • #41: Valkyrie

Now lets meet our next five entrants!

  • 1 #40: Nightmare: 68.5 points
  • 2 #39: DUCK!: 69 points
  • 3 #38: Shatter: 75.5 points
  • 4 #37: Warhead: 81 points
  • 5 #36: Bombshell: 91.5 points

Much like the aforementioned Complete Control, the brainchild of Jim Smentowski was the bonafide posterboy of not just BattleBots, but combat robotics as a whole. The enormous 4-footblade was literally deemed too dangerous for its first competition. Nightmare was a shoe-in for Top 16 in every competition, as it stacked knockouts like poker chips. …

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 7)

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment, we took a look at Bloodsport and its chilling new white paintjob, an intense look matched only by the destructive power of its upgraded weapon. Today we'll examine a fellow horizontal from an established team hoping to regain some lost prominence with fans, and based on their fights so far, they're certainly succeeding.

Before we get to that, however, I want to give a quick shoutout to Battlebots Destructathon referee Sean Patrick Bryan, who left the show at the end of the year. I know most people reading this probably don't care much about the people side of the live show, since it's all scripted actors playing parts, but they really do make a massive difference for the presentation of the …

BattleBots is notoriously expensive, and the majority of builders around the world will tell you that the barrier of entry is only going to get higher. It's because of this that when it was announced that a 2020 rookie robot would only cost around $4000, many people were skeptical about how well it would do. However, Vegas-native Jeff Waters showed the BattleBots community that the price tag doesn’t translat…

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 6)

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment, we took a look at Disarray, the first entry of Wildcat Robotics into the world of heavyweight robot combat. To contrast last issue's rookie bot, today's entry is a long-standing veteran with several seasons' worth of experience under its belt and a team of seasoned competitors across multiple weight classes. Let's dive in!

Bloodsport first debuted way back in World Championship IV, helping to fill the void left by ICEWave's absence. It firmly established itself as a strong robot, but failed to break into the top 16. Some off-season upgrades brought it to stardom in 2020, defeating eventual champion End Game and earning the #2 seed before being upset by surprise breakout Tantrum. Since then, …

TOP 50 MODERN BATTLEBOTS (PART ONE)

Happy 2024, BattleBots Fans! This past week, I conducted a fan poll that allowed you all to vote on your top 50 BattleBots since 2015, and around 50 ballots later, I have finally crafted a finalized list! For those not in the loop, voters were tasked with assessing their lists based on a few factors, including competitive achievements and technological innovation. Bots were assigned points based on where in the standings they were placed (for example, the #1 ranked bot would recieve the most points per ballot), and these points were tallied up to create these final standings. I intend to announce these competitors in batches at a time, but before we begin, allow me to recognize some bots that just narrowly missed the cut:

  • Railgun MAX: 29.5 …

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 5)

Hello, and welcome back! Apologies for the break, holidays and all. Last time, we took a look at rookie sensation Horizon, who proved the power of its unique torque-reaction weaponry during a weekend against Doom. Today we'll take a look at a true Battlebots rookie, one with no experience at the heavyweight level beyond what it's achieved at the Proving Ground. Let's dive right in!

The first Proving Ground weekend ever was marked by the debut of two rookie robots: Disarray and Pteradominator. While Pteradominator came from a builder who had competed way back in the day, Disarray was brought by a team completely new to the heavyweight scene, composed entirely of University of Arizona students. With a battle of old vs new between two totally …

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment, we took a look at the promising flipper Banshee, whose success and flair will almost certainly win it a spot in World Championship VIII. Today, we'll examine another of WCVII's standout rookies, a unique bot who's even shared the arena with Banshee before. Let's dive right in!

Horizon was first revealed to fans in 2021, receiving strong interest due to its unique torque reaction arm design. Though it was not accepted onto the show at the time, the team continued to iterate and refine the concept, even building a 12lb version called Skyline to help prove that it would work. This proved enough for the selection committee, and when World Championship VII was announced Horizon was among the most…

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 3)

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment, we took a look at Magnitude, who embodies the idea that wins aren't everything. Today, we'll take a look at a bot who found true success in the Proving Ground and has used that to catapult itself high up in the rankings. Coincidentally, it's also the first non-spinner on our list! Let's get to it.

When Banshee was revealed ahead of World Championship VII, it received quite a lot of hype. Builder David Small is well known as one of the only roboteers using pneumatic weaponry in the insect weight classes, with his famed flippers Kelpie and Highlander. In addition, he already had experience at the heavyweight level as a member of the Malice team, giving him an experience edge over other rookies…

Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 2)

Hello, and welcome back! In our last installment we took a look at Doom, the plucky hammer saw who's spent the last year slowly building its reputation back up from clown to competitor. Today, we'll discuss another robot who, despite limited success, has managed to win over apprehensive fans. Let's dive right in!

Like Doom, Magnitude's early response was somewhat tepid. During early teases, questions swirled about the type of robot it could be, but once it was revealed as an eggbeater drum many felt their interest in it wane. After all, with so many verts already competing and a number of strong eggbeaters already lining the roster, what could Magnitude bring that Riptide, Black Dragon and Copperhead couldn't, let alone star rookie Manta? Battlebots: Proving Grounds - The Top 10 Winners(Part 1)

Recently between seasons of Battlebots, our community has had relatively little to talk about. Sure, there've been events in the UK, smaller events like NHRL, and of course discussions of old seasons aplenty, but they simply aren't the same. There's just something special about Battlebots, the most prominent robot fighting competition in the world, where the best and brightest come together to fight it out for the Giant Nut. And between the airing of the final episode and the filming of the next, there's a void that no other competition can fill.

But this year, we were graced with the greatest addition to Battlebots since the fight night format was introduced: Battlebots Destructathon and the Proving Ground. Although the main show is meant …

I have a feeling the champion might be either SawBlaze, Endgame, or JackPot. BattleBots is an ever-evolving sport the field of competitors reflects this. When People Take Things too Seriously: Scaling Up a Viper Kit

A little while ago, oh, der Funfundzwanzig de Augusta Dos mil Veintitres (the 15th of August, 2023 for those not literate in their German, Spanish and whatever sounded right), a couple innocous Discord messages were flying about in the NHRL server. A user by the username of "Catsai06" or something like that (I dont have acces to Discord at the moment), discussed interest in seeing the Fingertech Viper kit scaled up to heavyweight. Its probably one if thousands of ideas put out into the void, but I have been working on scaling up robots, making new ones, for the past two years in the heavyweight division, so I figured I would take this single comment a bit seriously.

This comment was almost certaintly a joke or passing comment (someone would…

The Good, The GRAB, And The Ugly: An In-Depth Look at Season 5's GRABOT

The pandemic era was certainly a weird time for many things. The American people were captivated by international sports because we couldn't get it together enough to do them ourselves, education was set back 2 years for many kids, and BattleBots continued with a most unusual roster. Unlike any seasons before or after it, there was a variable who's who of robots who came in, lost, and never returned a la many a Robot Wars Series 3 competitor. For many, this season was defined by highlights such as the birth of Rusty and fights such as End Game-Tombstone and Valkyrie-Rotator. However, this is where I begin to see things just a little differently. For me, the BBQ grills and silly string of Black Widow and the suplexes of SlamMow defined this…

The Story of Traves T

When the BattleBots website was updated earlier in the year, a number of fights caught the attention of the fanbase. But none garnered quite the same attention as the one featuring the enigma of a robot known as Traves T.. Immediately, the name rang no bells amidst the community, so we naturally turned to Greg Munson who affectionally described it as a "novelty robot", but did not elaborate on its design, weaponry, or team history. That was all to come.

Typically, the moment a render or CAD reveal becomes public, a lot of those questions are answered. But Traves T. was not a typical robot. The original reveal – which appeared more like a cropped photo of a near-finished build – showed a machine the likes of which we had never seen before. A l…

Weekly Top 5: Horizontal Spinners

Hello bot fans! It should come as no surprise that we here at the wiki are big fans of talking about robots. Honestly, it's a big part of my day and my social circles, and I wish I could convey more of that passion here. Writing bot articles is fun and all, but sometimes you just really wanna talk freely about the bots and fights you love, y'know? So today I'm gonna kick off a little social project: a series of weekly top fives, where people can discuss their favorite bots, fights, moments and more in a much more free and fluid manner! Today's topic: horizontal spinners.

Horizontal spinners have been among the most popular and interesting robots since the dawn of the sport. From Blendo and MechaVore to Tombstone and Valkyrie, many of the mo…

Known as Bradley Boy to some and Smurf to others I might as well peel back the curtain on my Combat Robotics fandomness (is that a word?)

I became a fan of BattleBots during the ABC Era then the lull period happened and I fell out of the fandom until the Discovery Channel comeback.

As for favorite bots I'd have to say HyperShock (the rakening) and Diesector.

That's pretty much my story.

Builder's Database is back online! :)

Just a heads up for all admins and editors to the BB Wiki.

Builder's Database is a useful community site for existing bot builders that sign up for new minor bot events outside of BattleBots. So far Team Whyachi, Infernolab, Robotic Death Company, Team Toad, Team Think Tank, Mutant Robots, Nightmare, Inertia Labs, The Bot Dudes, and Odin Robotics were registered. After a 10 day hiatus after the shutdown of the old site, I got to know it's owned and hosted by captain Marc DeVits of Team IceWave who reopened the site in it's Beta version. I have the last batch of the old profiles to upload to the Wiki. If there are any other remaining BattleBots teams that I have possibly missed, please let me know! :)

Episode 3: Kenny Florian introduces the first-ever projectile weapon on BattleBots, the 5lb metal slug employed by newcomers Double Jeopardy.
Episode 4: A special intro highlighting the return of Gigabyte's team, Robotic Death Company. Features clips of Gigabyte's sister machine Megabyte fighting Tombstone at the untelevised 2009 Pro Championship, though Chris Rose erroneously states that Megabyte won that particular battle.

Draft Page: Weight Divisions

This is a work-in-progress draft for the 'Weight Divisions' page, another new mainspace article covering weight classes featured in various BattleBots seasons and events. Influenced by the similar 'Weight Classes' page which I have helped update, edit and evolve over on the Robot Wars Wiki.

Throughout the history of BattleBots, competitor robots have often been classified under separate categories commonly known as weight divisions or weight classes. Prior to the modern ABC/Discovery seasons, a number of dedicated tournaments and/or Rumbles would be staged for multiple divisions at a time during a single event. A selection of matches from each of these would end up being aired in televised events such as those forming the original Comedy Central …

Draft Page: Judges

This is a work-in-progress draft for the 'Judges' page, following a similar mould to the similarly-titled article over on the Robot Wars Wiki.

Judges

In the event that more than one robot survived the full duration of a BattleBots match, a panel of three Judges would decide the winner based on a set of criteria which varied between seasons. Initial categories included aggression, strategy and damage, with a fourth, control, being introduced for the rebooted seasons while strategy was gradually phased out.

Several Judges would appear over the course of the original 1999 events and televised seasons from the Comedy Central, ABC and Discovery eras. Most would usually have backgrounds in robotics, engineering, special effects, computer science and/or robo…

Adoption of the BattleBots Wiki

Hi there,

You might've seen my name pop up more than a few times recently in the recent edits section, and that's because I've strived to give the BB wiki the more professional look it deserves. Having been a sporadic Robot Wars Wiki editor for a few years now, I've taken a few leaves from their book with regards to putting together a consistent format for every reboot BattleBots competitor's page, with help from users such as Falco276 and Alexarch. However, I've noticed several necessary actions are locked to admins, who seem to be totally absent from the Wiki. For example, the BattleBots Wiki-Main Page still has a paragraph suggesting Season 5 is the ongoing season, something that's been neglected for at least 13 months but we're unable t…

2020 Battlebot Predictions.

I'll be updating this each episode, and when the episode is actually on. I'll be attempting to react to this, if I have enough storage on the device I'm using.

(Main Fight) Prediction: End Game wins. End Game oh End Game, if you saw my Top 10 Disappointing Bots, you'll know my opinion on them. You'll also know that I'll continue to think they're disappointing until they beat Tombstone for calling him out. The reason why I think End Game will win? Two Reasons. One, End Game always does the opposite of what I pick on Small to Big Fights. I thought he'd beat Ribbot, he DID NOT. I thought he'd lose to Cobalt, HE DID NOT. Two, Vertical Spinners are Tombstone's Nightmare, and In my heart I want Tombstone to win, but because of that End Game is going …

Best of BattleBots

During this (currently) ongoing series, I essentially ask you, the people as well as look online for what is considered the best battles from EVERY episode of EVERY series, with at least one battle per episode, no matter how weak. I have recently decided, maybe giving BattleBots a try. Now, the only issue is I won't be able to do the rebooted Seasons of BattleBots, but I am open to suggestions to 1999 Events-Season 5.0. This will be based on how loved this fights are and if they are memorable for certain moments.

  • 9 #9 ???

Obviously. During his 3 Giant Nut runs, and 4 Season's overall, Bite Force has turned from a great control bot, to one of the most destructive bots in Battlebots. If winning 3 Giant Nuts in 4 …

Top 10 Best Battlebots of the Renewed Season’s.

So, I don't want this to be opinionated, and I actually want people to agree and disagree with me, so that we can accurately place these robots, and which robots should be in the Honorable Mentions. If you see this, mind commenting and giving your opinion on where the robots rank? And if some either should, or shouldn't be there?

  • 1 #1. Bite Force
  • 2 #2. Tombstone
  • 3 #3. Minotaur
  • 4 #4. Witch Doctor
  • 5 #5. Lock-Jaw
  • 6 #6. Whiplash
  • 7 #7. Son of Whyachi
  • 8 #8. HUGE
  • 9 #9. SawBlaze
  • 10 #10. Bronco

Obviously. During his 3 Giant Nut runs, and 4 Season's overall, Bite Force has turned from a great control bot, to one of the most destructive bots in Battlebots. If winning 3 Giant Nuts in 4 Season's not good enough, how about that Bite Force not only has the best record, but h…

10 Disappointing Bots in Season 4.

Side Note: Not In Order from Least to Most or anything. Side Note2: This will probably be revised. The way I did this is, (1) If it's a bot that competed before, I compare their past performance, and compare their wins and losses.  (2) If it's a new bot, I look at their hype, and probably how they should've done if they lost matches They Shouldn't Have.

  • 1 1. End Game
  • 2 2. Minotaur
  • 3 3. Bombshell
  • 4 4. DUCK!
  • 5 5. Monsoon
  • 6 6. Bronco
  • 7 7. Ragnarok
  • 8 8. Shatter
  • 9 9. Gigabyte
  • 10 10. WAR Hawk

Until End Game beats Tombstone, it's always going to be disappointing for me. End Game is 50/50 for predicting, but even then I always predict it to lose, because ever since the lost against Ribbot, I haven't been able to trust it to win. It's only impressive win in S4 was again…

Season 4 Prediction.....Prediction.

Well I felt like it was becoming a bit long, so I decided to just make it another thing. So basically this is how I think it would've gone if my predictions were actually correct. (Which means every 2-2 bot except Cobalt and Rotator aren't making it.)

  • 2 #1 Seed Death Roll vs #16 Seed DUCK!
  • 3 #2 Seed Witch Doctor vs #15 Seed WAR Hawk
  • 4 #3 Seed Tombstone vs #14 Seed Texas Twister
  • 5 #4 Seed Whiplash vs #13 Seed Ribbot
  • 6 #5 Seed Son of Whyachi vs #12 Seed Blacksmith
  • 7 #6 Seed HUGE vs #11 Seed Quantum

  • 10 Round of 8
  • 11 #1 Seed Death Roll vs #9 Seed Cobalt

Battlebots Season 4 Seed Predictions

So I'm doing this because......why not? I kinda just want to sit down and think about who will make it in, and what seed they'll be. I'm going to do the ones that have all 4 Fights done. (So No Bite Force.) Guess this is like an updated list from Nightmare, except it's going to include all 16 bots. (This'll either go fine, or horribly wrong.)

Notes: Also this was quick-saved, and No Bots that have competed in the Desperado Tournament

  • 1 Death Roll [4-0] (Seeded #1)
  • 2 Witch Doctor [4-0] (Seeded #2)
  • 3 Tombstone [3-1] (Seeded #3)
  • 4 Whiplash [3-1] (Seeded #4)
  • 5 Son Of Whyachi  [3-1] (Seeded #5)
  • 6 HUGE [3-1] (Seeded #6)
  • 7 SawBlaze [3-1] (Seeded #7)
  • 8 Lock-Jaw [3-1] (Seeded #8)
  • 9 Cobalt [2-2] (Seeded #9)
  • 10 Rotator [2-2] (Seeded #10)
  • 11 Quantum [2-2] (Seeded #11)
  • 12 Blacksm…

My bracket for the top 16

So here's who I think will make the top sixteen.

  • 1 Rotator
  • 2 Bombshell
  • 3 Bite Force
  • 4 Tombstone
  • 5 SawBlaze
  • 6 HyperShock

How is a robot that beat Tombstone supposed to NOT make the top sixteen, by knockout even, the only robots the beat Tombstone by knockout up to that point were Bombshell and Root Canal. It would probably be through the regular season, unless it goes 2-2 and uses the Last Chance Rumble or Play-In Rumble.

I know it's 0-3 but don't count it out just yet, Bombshell usually gains momentum as the season goes on. Remember when it got literally roasted by Complete Control and then became the runner-up? It would probably get there through the Desperado Tournament or Last Chance Rumble.

As much as I hate to say it, Bite Force is probably garentee…

Could Tombstone be becoming outdated?

I mean it's been racking up the losses lately and the wins in season 4 were because something happened that changed the course of the fight, against Lock-Jaw, Tombstone only won because Ray used the "use your wheels as bait" strategy he is known for, and it would've lost to SawBlaze if it wasn't for the pulverizer separating them. And both Witch doctor and Rotator beat it when Tombstone faced them (although the loss to Witch Doctor was kind of predictable because it only lost to Tombstone in 2015 because it was flipped over). I bet that even if it faces Free Shipping it would lose if nothing happened to change the fight. Think about it, every robot from season 1 have changed at least some since then, not Tombstone, it has remained the same…

How they could make BattleBots better

Don't get me wrong BattleBots is already a great show, but there are a few ideas that I have that could make it better.

Because Original Sin would dominate everyone and simple wedge bots can be entertaining.

Remember Complete Control vs Ghost Raptor? Imagine the gift box match but the match wasn't paused. Also because it would bring variety to BattleBots. Ever since that stupid primary weapon rule was introduced in 2016, over half of the robots competing at a time were are with some sort of spinner.

Because spinners are getting boring, they make up more than half of the competition and win with a simple "drive into the opponent and do damage" strategy. And it would cause a Robot Wars effect where flippers would become more common.

My top 10 Favorite Robots in BattleBots.

Exactly what it says on the tin, also these are just my opinions so if you think otherwise then that's your problem.

  • 1 Number 10: Tombstone
  • 2 Number 9: Cobalt
  • 3 Number 8: Bombshell
  • 4 Number 7: Diesector
  • 5 Number 6: Chomp
  • 6 Number 5: Warhead
  • 7 Number 4: RotatoR
  • 8 Number 3: Free Shipping
  • 9 Number 2: Bronco
  • 10 Number 1: Witch Doctor

Do I really need to explain this one? Yes? Ok then. Tombstone is probably the logo of modern BattleBots at this point. And you can count on the fingers of one hand how many people hate it.

I have loved Cobalt ever since it destroyed Overhaul in 2016. And like everyone else here I'm still mad about it losing to DUCK! because of the floor. REPAIR THE FLOOR ALREADY BATTLEBOTS!

I loved Bonbshell from the moment it beat Red Devil and like th…
